Bug Description

Fresh install, no sound. Tried as suggested on forums:
sudo apt-get remove --purge alsa-base
sudo apt-get remove --purge pulseaudio
sudo apt-get clean && sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get install alsa-base
sudo apt-get install pulseaudio
Rebooting does not bring back sound.

I've just installed Ubuntu 11.10 64bit and this problem is still present.

Is there any workaround to fix this after installation?

A large number of users are being affected too, but most of them use Windows 7.

I know why people do not come here to complain.

When they perform Step 4 of the manual
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure

The packages "ubuntu-desktop" and others are uninstalled, and the user loses the Graphical Interface.

I had to do:

apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
apt-get install gnome

to retrieve the graphical interface
