Does this happen with other programs? I seem to recall seeing this behavior before, but with other programs (e.g. Gaim, Liferea, Pygmy).

At least it happens with normal gossip, it's not a gossip-telepathy bug.

It appears that bug 81107 is a duplicate of this. In addition, this appears to be happening to a variety of people with many programs. There is a forum thread here about this issue: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=347023. It may be related to the fact that all programs launched from the panel share the same PGID; a gnome developer claims that assigning a shared PGID to apps from the gnome panel is not standard gnome behavior.

Actually, IIRC at least with GTK+ 2.8, there was some tricky handling one had to do to get a program to survive any system tray. I'm not sure what has changed since then, but this could easily be that GTK+ bug cropping up.

You may well be correct. Gnome developer claims to have resolved this as a GTK bug: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=401481.

If "newest" means "2.10.11-0ubuntu1" then yes, it's still a problem.

Gossip upstream has quit supporting telepathy. Work is going on in the empathy project now. Do you have the problem with empathy (in gutsy)?
