Bug Description

[Problem] USB external disk read/writes which the systems reports by turning the monitor to text only, but X continues to work. The main laptop screen will suddenly switch to "black screen with text (the error message), a blinking cursor and a working mouse pointer", while the external monitor continues to work ok. Please also refer to video, as it is slightly difficult to explain in writing only: http://ubuntuone.com/4co3KnLvJXAyryLT3FKWbZ

The X.org log gets flooded with the below when it occurs:
(WW) intel(0): first get vblank counter failed: Invalid argument

WORKAROUND: Disconnect the external monitor.

Appears related to Bug #1066410, although the reported black screen with text occured well after start-up.

John brondum, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xorg <replace-with-bug-number>

Thank you for your understanding.

the bug appears to have been fixed in subsequent releases. For 13.10, I haven't seen problem.

John Brondum, thank you for your comments. Would you need a backport to a release prior to 13.10, or may this be marked as Status Invalid?
