Canvas repainting slowdown

Bug Description

I have recently noticed that Inkscape repaints canvas much slower than earlier. This problem is easily noticeable with large zoom factors. I prepared simple svg file with 10 objects for testing purposes. To see what I am talking about try to zoom the canvas to 500% and then try to use your mouse wheel to zoom in and zoom out. Zooming works much slower comparing to version 0.48 so it seems to me that it is a regression.

Confirmed on Debian testing and Windows XP, Inkscape trunk revision 12042.
Difficult to set an importance. On my machine (a recent i5 proc with tons of memory) I can notice it's a bit slower, but not something (at least with the example file) that makes Inkscape unusable.

Also tested with revision 11951 (before Alex's changes), and the (relative) slowness was already present.

Not quite sure what "slower" in this context means: don't forget that the zoom factor has changed compared to 0.48 (bug #1072007), and is now always the same, independent of whether the pointer is over an object or an empty canvas area.

Unable to notice slowness. Maybe my computer is too fast? :(
CPU fans don't make a sound either.
