CTRL+A and Backspace does not delete entire search string

Bug Description

Also when CTRL-A + Backspace to delete the entire string, it only deletes the last character, you can do a combo of CTRL+A+Backspace to delete everything, but that is irritating.

Yes, this is quite frustrating when you have a typo or wish to search for another app when you've already entered a search query.

Also you can't insert a caracter, it always appears at the end no matter where you put your cursor. Can't delete either.

I can now delete multiple characters at once, anywhere in the entry.
However I can't add characters in the midle of an entry.
And by default the selection follows the mouse cursor.

Attached is a screncast detailing the behaviour.
I could not reproduce the automatic selection.
It shows how one cant modify an entry, just delete part of it.
