Bug Description

Launchpad portlets are fixed in width. Users of Launchpad often enlarge the text, which makes the text in these portlets wider than the portlets themselves.

It would be ideal if portlets had their current widths set as a minimum, but expanded dynamically to accommodate the text inside them.

This problem has become more apparent with the increased text size introduced in 1.1.8.

For example, see https://bugs.staging.launchpad.net/firefox/+bug/86002, or the attached screen shot.

In the example, the strings "Search firefox (upstream)" and "Subscribers to bug 86002" are too wide for their containing portlets.

Some of those portlet titles should probably be trimmed. For instance, "Subscribers to bug NNNN" could just be "Subscribers". It is obvious from the context what it is for.

I agree with James' suggestion, though this might not be enough for some users.

If users increase the font size using their browser settings, then the text rapidly becomes truncated by the fixed portlet sizes. I've attached a screen shot to demonstrate. If it's true that many users do this, then a more accessible solution might be provided by using relative measurements for the widths and heights of portlets, allowing them scale with the font size, as in:

Headings can now (r6629) wrap to multiple lines, fixing the problem shown in the screenshot. But in very wide windows, the boxes are still narrower than probably they should be.

They are variable width in the 3.0 design.
