Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in xorg.

This also affects the IBM Thinkpad T20 series and my guess would be every thinkpad through current the T30, T40, and T60 series.

I am wondering how this can be High
importance but this bug #134141 that affects all thinkpads with scroll
button is in wishlist when there is an easy clear fix? This fix would
make it so newbs with thinkpads wouldn't get frustrated with lack of
ootb functionality... Sorry for the off topic response.

Probably right that the other bug should not be "high", but at least it affects a lot of users, and is immediately fixed when we use input-hotplug. This, on the other hand, is different and needs discussion, since I'm guessing there is no way to reliably detect laptops that benefit from this feature.

hmm... I think there needs to be a connector to the hardware DB that people post fixes for individual laptops. Then you can choose which laptop you have and download all the fixes.

We could have trusted community hardware testers for the fixes and when you first boot up it will tell you that you are running a laptop and to click here to see if there are any enhancements for your laptop.

@cornbread, great idea and in fact mvo and I chatted with the hardware db people to try to get more hookability in, but so far there's been no developments in this area. If you're really interested, you could write a blueprint (it'd need to be quite well detailed though to get enough attention).
