update-manager failes if you do not download the latest kernal

Bug Description
Hi,
Basically I updated everything except for all of the new kernal related packages as they appeared to break my Nvidia drivers. However they all appeared to work except now it broken the updates:
Could not initialize the package information
A unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.
Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:
'E:Malformed 3rd word in the Status line, E:Error occurred while processing xserver-

This error sounds like 'apt' was not updated. Could you please check that apt is the latest version ?
