Bug Description

Using the cellular data connection, I have noticed that if I have the 2G/3G option enabled for a faster connection, then, if I lock and leave the phone on the side for a while, when I pick it back up, most of the times its connection to the network is lost. Neither the browser, or the scopes or anyone sees the network.

Solution:
If I turn the cellular data off and back on again, then it will go back to working.

Note:
... that when the 2G-only option is enabled, this doesn't happen. The connection will always be there, no matter how long you have the device waiting without doing nothing.

Device:
BQ aquaris E4.5 ubuntu edition, everything as it was uppon shipping...

More info on the subject:

So at the same time that the web browser, gmail scope, facebook scope etc. have no internet connectivity, if I do ifconfig in the terminal, it shows that the device still has its ip address.

Aren't there any other users observing this?

How many SIMs do you have installed in your phone? We're currently aware of a problem that can occur if two SIMs are installed, where the SIM selected for mobile data can change upon reboot, or network change / re-registration ( ie. if the signal is lost, and the phone re-connects to the carrier ). Details can be found in bug #1413672.

Also, a few more questions...

1. What does the network indicator display when this happens? Is '2g', '3g', or 'h' displayed?

2. If the indicator does indicate that the network is connected to mobile data, could you run 'ip route' in a terminal and let us know what it outputs?

3. Finally, from your description, it sounds like this only effects mobile data, not voice or SMS?

Hi

I only have a single SIM in slot 1 of the BQ phone

And is your scenario exactly the same as @eotako's? If so, can you answer the same questions that I asked in comment #4?

It certainly sounds the same.

In answer to your previous questions.

1. I see an h in the menu bar

2. I will send as soon as I am in mobile range to test. On WiFi at present.

3. Correct! Only seems to affect data. Call and SMS is fine.

Thanks

Can you also try to ping a known hostname ( eg. ubuntu.com ) from the terminal?

Seems like me and dambuster are experiencing the same thing.
I'm using the phone in Belgium and Mobistar is the provider if that helps with the clues at all...

@Tony Espy:
I've been using only one sim card, trying either slot 1 or 2, didn't see any difference.

answer to question 1 : the indication 'h' remains on the top bar, like when it's working.

answer to question 3 : Everything else provider related apart from data works just fine.

For question no2, I'm trying to reproduce the problem right now, but it's the first time that it works no problem... (fancy that!)
When it happens again I'll post back.

Thanks!

If there is anything else I can try to help fish out the bug, let me know.

Other than 'ip route' as mentioned, 'nmcli d' will tell us what network-manager thinks is connected.

The one other thing that could help is to attach the syslog from your phone right after the problem occurs. You can grab it using 'adb pull /var/log/syslog'.

  • mylog.dat Edit (1.1 MiB, application/x-ns-proxy-autoconfig; name="mylog.dat")

Hello again,

Yesterday everything was working like a gem for the first time, and I
thought I would make a fool of myself, but thankfully :) the problem
surfaced again this morning, and here is everything:

pinging ubuntu.com gives:
unknown host ubuntu.com

ip route gives:
default via 10.165.204.101 dev ccmni0 proto static

nmcli d gives:
device:/ril_1 -> type:gsm -> state:connected
device:/ril_0 -> type:gsm -> state:disconnected

I could not grab the syslog with the command you gave me, for some reason
adb gives 'adb command not found'.
I got it with a simple cat syslog > mylog.dat, and I attach a shorter
version of the file to this email.
Note that at the beginning of the log, I had another ip address (could be
that with this address everything was working fine, but I'm not sure)
anyway, the ip with which the problem occurs, is reported at timestamp
9:48:45.

Another thing I've noticed, is that when the problem does NOT occur (that
is, everything is working just fine), when trying to access internet after
idling, the indicator of the connection on the top bar would first switch
to 'E', (stuff will start loading) and then back again to 'H' (and stuff
will continue to load faster). When the problem occurs, the indicator
remains always on 'H' and nothing happens -- the scopes or the webpages
show network error etc.

I hope any of this proves a bit helpful.

I remain at your desposal

@Tony Espy:

Same symptoms, different reports (let's call this 'case 2'):

So now the problem happened again, but I did 'ifconfig' out of curiosity, and there was no ip address registered... in fact, the command listed only the loopback device, but not the cellular network device.

Again the 'H' sign was fixed on the notification bar.

ip route returned nothing.

nmcli d returned:
device:/ril_1 -> type:gsm -> state:connected
device:/ril_0 -> type:gsm -> state:disconnected

But the most interesting part is the log file, which now starts with (for the COMPLETE version, look at the attached file):
Apr 2 20:17:27 ubuntu-phablet kernel: [24961.173972][WMT-CTRL][W]wmt_ctrl_rx:wmt_ctrl_rx be signaled, but no rx data(200)

So this line appears also in the syslog I posted earlier today, and after it shows up, there is no other networkmanager activity.
I searched on launchpad, and this line shows up in a known issue with the sleep/wakeup procedures:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-push/+bug/1435109

I am no expert, I'm just trying to follow leads, but this all seems relevant. Correct me if I'm just wasting your time :)

I have the same issue on Tesco Mobile on 2G/3G. I am running the Ubuntu Phone along side and Iphone (on Tesco Mobile) and the Iphone retains 2G/3G with no issues. I only have one SIM in the Ubuntu phone. I have manually entered the TescoMobile WAP settings and have flicked between the Tesco settings and my manual input and still have the same issue. If I restart the ubuntu phone the issue goes away until the phone sleeps for some time (ie over half an hour). In some cases the H is dispalyed continually in the notification bar (the Iphone still shows 3G).

Aplogies for sounding like a novice, but I am really trying to get into this!

We're pretty certain that this is the same as the underlying cause for bug #1435328. I'm not going to mark this as duplicate though as the scenario is different, and I'd like confirmation from @eotakas once we have a hot fix update ready.

Ok, i will follow bug #1435328 and when you issue a patch i will give it a
try and let you know how it went. In the meantime, if you want me to try
anything that would help confirm that both bugs have the same source, let
me know.

As the instruction says, I am adding the comment here, because I think that the duplicate status is wrong.

The bug to which this one is reported to be a duplicate of, is fixed in the update I freshly installed today.
However, the problem reported in the present bug persists.

I read all the referenced bug comments and probably bug cause is linked between them, even if the scenarios are different.

Aquaris 4.5 Ubuntu ed. keep disconnecting itself randomly on 3g, with a Lycamobile and a Postemobile SIMs, inside the UK area.

This problem can be due to the one described in the 'duplicated' bug: a non catched error re-routing modem/wifi interfaces.
