Also confirmed on Xubuntu 15.10, Inkscape trunk rev. 14695.

But opening the defs element in the XML editor shows that each marker is different. They all share the same stockid (reference to the original marker) but all have a different id. I guess it's not a bug, but a feature to allow you to customize each marker (with a different color or a different transfom attribute).
That said, it would be useful to add an option to use a clone of the original marker, with the possibility to unlink it when a change is needed.

I have the same problem on Ubuntu 16.04 (Inkscape 0.91).
Some of images have a huge list of duplicates.
Also, some of the duplicates can apply the marker but some of them don't.

The marker list has duplicates when doing the following with marker'ed lines:

  * creating new ones,
  * copy-pasting,
  * duplicating.

As a consequence, the time to scroll through the marker list becomes longer.
Also Inkscape may (gradually?) slow down notably as the lists grows, although I can't reproduce this consistently. Currently, for me, this seems the biggest issue with Inkscape. Could the importance be raised?

agreed here, it seems like this should be fairly easy to fix, and I cannot think of a single reason why it would ever be useful to have all these duplicates.

This is quite an annoying bug as I do origami and have, literally, hundreds of arrows which I create, remove, duplicate, copy&paste, etc. and the list is a hell to work with.

At the present day, still bugging in current stable and 1.0beta2 versions.
