Problems with fonts that have characters with extreme serif parts

Bug Description

Using 0.92 on Ubuntu.
Example font, Annabel 1 (http://www.dafont.com/annabel.font)

I'm not sure if there's a term for this, but some fonts have huge parts that stick out, like the example font above. There are problems with this font in Inkscape.

1) It is rendered differently depending on zoom level and when resizing the window (inkscape.ogv)
2) Fragments are left behind when hiding layers (inkscape-1.ogv)
3) Saving as PNG images also cuts these parts off too
4) Saving as PDF and then opening in a PDF viewer works if "convert text to paths" is selected, but truncates these fragments if "embed fonts" is selected. I'm not sure if this is a problem with my PDF viewer or Inkscape.

cannot reproduce on r14761 (fedora17) my inkscape release number might not be correct though, but it's definitely pre-0.92

I can confirm however that some of the parts of the extreme serifs do appear to be clipped, but I don't have that display artifacts problem.

Based on tests with archived builds (on OS X 10.7.5):
- not reproduced with Inkscape 0.48.5 r10040,
- not reproduced with lp:inkscape rev <= 12487,
- reproduced with lp:inkscape rev >= 12488,
- reproduced with Inkscape 0.91 r13725, 0.92.0 r15299;
this is likely the same issue as tracked in

* Bug #1450675 “Text is displayed cut in half (rev >= 12488)”
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1450675

Known workaround for fonts which trigger these (among other factors zoom-dependent) artifacts with Inkscape's renderer (also affects bitmap export): once the text content is determined and styled as intended, convert the text to path (Shift+Ctrl+C). If later edits are to be expected, keep a copy of the original text on a hidden layer.

Reproduced on Windows XP (32-bit), with lp:inkscape/0.92.x rev. 15346.

Probably the same cause as Bug #1450675, but not the same fix (I can't reproduce the issue with the Harrington and Gentium fonts).

Changed in inkscape:
importance: Undecided → Medium
status: New → Triaged

I confirm it also happens in Inkscape 0.92 running on Windows 10
