Bug Description

Zooming should keep selected objects centered in view
so that objects are not "lost" after zooming in or out.
if nothing is selected zooming could default to the
center of the screen.

I have no idea what it zooms to now, the corner? But I
lose things a lot and have to zoom a little, center,
zoom a little, center, zoom a little, center, when I
use the key board of the scroll wheel on the mouse to
zoom, which is not very convenient.

selecting view > selection or view > drawing work fine
but they are "all the way in" or "all the way out" I'm
looking for something to give me more control in between.

I disagree. +/- key zooming zooms into the center of view
and that's the way it should be. That's the way it behaves
in all other apps. Even the title of your submission,
"Zooming should keep selected object centered", shows a
problem because it's unclear what to do if it was NOT
centered to start with? Or not even shown in the view? Shift
view to center on selection, then zoom? That often will give
unexpected results, and is in general counterintuitive. The
+/- keys have no assumed "position" on the screen and
therefore should zoom into/from center as now.

If you want to zoom into a particular point, that's what
middle-click and ctrl+wheel is for. They preserve the
relative position of the clicked point within view. Use them
on the selection or on any other point you want to keep in
the view.

Bulia, I agree with you... the necessary functionality
exists with the mouse.

Not in FrameMaker -- that's where I experienced the navigational convenience of this feature. Bugs #1338407 "Centre zooms on selected object or cursor" and #170445 "Zooming should keep selected object centered", both reported by me, are the same.

Some other apps do pan the image while zooming. imageJ moves the image so that the mouse cursor point is centered in the window, when you zoom. This can be very very handy. Actually, the issue is often not with zooming but with panning. One frequently finds oneself at the edge of the window and would like to quickly (one keystroke) pan the current mouse position to the center of the screen. In imageJ this could be accomplished with + followed by -. I suggest that a new panning command be added to InkScape. I'll add it as a bug report.

What about deselect object to centre on screen when zooming. If an object is selected, then make zooming on object the default. Or allow behaviour to be controlled by setting a preference.

Setting a preference avoid a religious argument about which is the 'correct' behaviour.
