Battery monitor fails to start

Bug Description

Battery monitor fails to start. When I select the Battery monitor from Panel->Add and press the Add button the applet does not appear onto the panel. I'm using Xubuntu 7.10 Desktop Edition.

The following error message is printed into .xsession-errors:

---
The program 'xfce4-battery-plugin' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 186 error_code 11 request_code 53 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at [WWW] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in xfce4-battery-plugin.

I don't know who suscribed the security team, but it's almost 100% irrelevant.

I did that. I thought that this is a security issue since the laptop may
suddenly switch itself off when the battery is low, which may result in
data loss (or even hard disk corruption?). In my laptop the power light
starts to blink when the battery is low, though.

I'm using the "Human" theme. The bug did not occur with the "Glossy" theme.

You can work around this bug by switching the theme to something else than Human (like Raleigh) before adding the battery applet to the panel. After adding the applet, you can switch back to Human, and the applet will stay.

This bug seems to affect all XFCE applets that display progress bars (like the system load applet).
