Opening Dash menu after logging into the Unity desktop shows no applications

I installed the unity desktop environment and logged in after reboot.
After clicking to open the Dash menu to see installed apps there are NONE?!
I realize that Unity isn't really up-to-date anymore, but it should at least show me my installed apps.
