Bug Description

Binary package hint: evolution

When looking at an email containing a forwarded email attachment, (in my case it was a air travel itinerary), the attachment (attachment file extension *.dat) fails to open in evolution and also fails when saved and opened from the desktop. When opened from the desktop, I get a text file that looks like raw html. I have attached it to this report. (*note* I obscured the email addresses for privacy)

I am using evolution 2.12.1 on ubuntu 7.10-i386.

Thank you for filing the bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately you have not provided enough information to help fix this bug. Is this problem of not able to open an attachment with all other types of file attachments or only with .dat? Or is it only with the particular attachment? Can you please provide us the attachment mentioned in your bug report as a separate attachment to your bug report?

.dat are raw data files and it can contain anything - text, binary or graphical data. If you can open the file in an editor (gEdit) and feel that the contents are like HTML, can you try opening it in a browser (Firefox) and check out the contents?

@Kyle,

It seems you forgot to attach the file...

Also, could you please (after sanitising as needed) add in here the raw headers for this email? We do not need the attachment(s) themselves, just the MIME headers. You can use <Ctrl>-u to see the raw email.

Thanks

Maybe you should give (y)tnef a try? Via tnef or ytnef (both packages are in universe) the content of a winmail.dat-file should be accessible. There was a plugin for evolution in the web that was making use of ytnef (see http://www.go-evolution.org/Tnef), but for nobody seems to work on it any longer.

Sorry, forgot to append the attachment appereantly, I don't know which line the MIME headers are (last time I touched html was in 5th grade). Also, in regards to your follow-up questions, this is the first attachment I opened in evolution, my usual email client is Thunderbird so I cannot say one way or another if this is an isolated problem or not

@Gert: we are releasing the tnef-attachment plugin on evolution-plugins-experimental 2.22 (Hardy), using the libytnef library. Indeed this library seems to have been orphaned by the author (no updates since 2005/2006), but it is still usable. Upstream has released (as of Evo 2.12) the tnef-attachment, but we did not include it in Gutsy or (up to now) Hardy due to a missing pre-req. This has been taken care of now, and we should have an update for Evo on the next few days.

But yes, meanwhile ytnef might do the trick. Thanks for the suggestion.

@Kyle Thanks for the attachment headers. Now... could you please do the same for the main email itself? I would like to see how the attachment is referred to there (in fact, how the MIME headers are set).

@Jair: I am disregarding your comment -- it does not seem to have anything to do with this bug.

What settings are you using for displaying html-mail? I've recently observed that such attachment.dat files are shown in Evolution as attachments, when the messages consist of two different mime-types (e.g. text/plain and html/plain), and you've chosen to prefer text-display over html one.

Evolution does not show these files when you choose to prefer the html-content (the content should be the same, only the markup is different). I get such mails mainly from people using MS Outlook. When I was talking about tnef and winmail.dat files, I thought about attachments produced due to some misconfiguration in older outlook-clients, so this does not seem to be related to that what you are talking about.

Oops, should be: text/html and not html/plain :-)

@hggdh

thank you so much. Indeed I knew that these files were tnef and that ytnef could do the trick outside of evolution but i was looking for something integrated. The key missing piece from all the posts i had seen so far was this:
evolution-plugins-experimental

I really appreciate your help as i was about to give up Linux and evolution since I was having difficulty in receiving colleagues emails properly.
THANKS!

I can still confirm this bug on karmic 9.10 with evolution 2.28.1

I simply create a new message and attach another mail to it, if i try to open that attachment it does that by default with gedit and of course it's not readable, the same happens of course if i receive a mail with attached another mail. i dont understand why i cant simply open the attached mail with evolution itself

I just ran into this in fully updated Karmic. See below the heavily sanitized email. Evolution displays an attachment named "attachment.dat." When I double click on it, it is treated as a text file, which opens in gvim for me.

Hi,

Please send me any input you have for bugs and copy CCFirst CCLast,
especially for work-around, which of course should be captured in
Bugzilla as well for any bug including the Keyword *releasenote*.

FYI - Here's our working list for bugs to include in the release notes
and also see attached for the first pass draft release notes.

Regards,

I don't know how release notes are generated. Is there a place where we
collect input for specific release notes?

Thanks,
