Bug Description

I am experiencing the same issues on Hardy. Is there a workaround?

Same problem. Why hasn't this been fixed? I can't find any convirt ubuntu packages either. Right now the package servers are being hammered, but I think the ubuntu-xen-desktop package is broken regardless.

So, I've upgraded another box from Gutsy to Hardy, and don't see this problem. However that box did not have Xen installed prior. On the box I am having the problem, I did have Xen installed. However, all stock Gutsy stuff prior to the upgrade. Perhaps more regression testing is needed?

Steps to reproduce:
1) Install Gutsy.
2) Install Xen.
3) Update to Hardy.

I found a workaround for it:

1 - Go to http://xenman.sourceforge.net/
2 - Click on Downloads
3 - At the option 'ConVirt 0.8.2' choose 'Source tarball'
4 - Unpack the package you downloaded
5 - Follow the instructions in the file 'README.install'

Notes:
1 - Before I try this way I also tried to install via apt-get install ubuntu-xen-desktop and so I tried apt-get with --build-deps parameter and I don't if it did the diference, but I think that it cost nothing run it too.
2 - To install paramiko simply run: apt-get install python-paramiko

That's all!

Should xenman not be built to a binary ubuntu package and then be placed on the archive.ubuntu.com-sites, together with that the package info from the deb sources need to be updated to include xenman: who can do that?

Convirt package and transitional xenman package already in Intrepid repository, but this dependency in Hardy is realy broken.

What needs to happen for this to be fixed? Is it just a case of adding the xenman/convirt package to the repository?

It's possible to install everything seperatly, but it seems funny that there would be an ubuntu-xen-desktop package if that's the intended route people should take.

Obviously what needs to happen is for the maintainer of ubuntu-xen-desktop to get enough time and leisure to take on this problem. At least either remove the dependency on xenman (convirt) or create a package for it.

However, there apparently *is* no maintainer who feels responsible for this (http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/ubuntu-xen-desktop lists Ubuntu MOTU developers as maintainers). Which I find troubling, seeing that Ubuntu 8.04 put a lot of emphasis on virtualisation and deployment of virtual machines, especially for "home users". I understand that KVM is the Ubuntu-way to go but to ignore Xen, the older, more mature and very much more thoroughly tested and more widely deployed solution definitely seems wrong.

I don't know if this is a political decision or just the more likely case of too little manpower but it certainly makes Ubuntu, and particularly the LTS release of 8.04 one of the worst choices for a Xen-based virtualisation setup. See related entries like bug #224340 or bug #218126 (which is supposed to be fixed but apparently issues remain). It is disappointing to say the least.

ConVirt now supports KVM, does this help push this issue... it is kind of strange that there is no maintainer for this package. Is there any other package under the virtualization umbrella that ConVirt should go ?
