Bug Description

My Hardy RC often crash/freeze. For 10 hours about 8 times. After crash/freeze computer run, music is playing, i can log with ssh, mouse is moving, but screen arent updated and computer dont respond to keyboard input (alt+ctrl+backspace isnt possible, cant turn num-lock, ...). This problem can be solved by using NVIDIA 173.08 beta drivers. I know their are betas, but are more stable than previous stable drivers. I think in stable hardy will be better to add in repository 173.08 drivers than 169.12.

Computer specs:
OS Ubuntu 8.04 RC amd64
AMD Athlon X2 3800+ SFF
4x1GB Adata DDR2-800 Extreme memory (4-4-4-12)
MSI K9A motherboard (ATI xpress 3200 chipset)
NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT 512MB
Hauppauge WinTV PVR-150
X-Fi eXtreme Gamer
etc...

After 1 day of testing 173.08 drivers and ubuntu, system looked completely stable ... but today system freezed again. I think it may look stupid, but in same time when i reinstalled drivers i changed im communicator to empathy and throw away pidgin. Today i performed system update and i needed to use pidgin for transfer some files. After updates was succesfully installed and transfer of files using pidgin was complete - system freezed again. After this i restarted computer and used empathy again - to now system is running stable.

Vladimir, please try different im (if you used pidgin) and write your experience please.

Now Ubuntu freezed with empathy too. This seems to be a x-server related problem.

Yes I am running a tc1100 with nvidia hardware.
This system was super stable under 7.10, now it locks up several times a day. Very frustrating. I am not a linux expert, I just want a stable system. I will revert back to the 7.10 unless somebody has an easy fix. I am relocating an office to Austin, and was planning to use almost exclusively Linux systems, I still might, but it will be the 7.10 ver.

I have been having this difficulty since 8.04 upgrade as well. I'm also on an hp tc1100 tablet pc with 1.5 Gb ram.

I have been using the proprietary NVIDIA drivers. I just disabled them and will post back if there is no success with that.

Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I haven't been able to figure out any way to reliably crash it, it will just suddenly completely lock up - the only solution is turning off the power to the computer and doing a full reboot.

I can confirm, I had thought it was heat related but after I had started monitoring the heat I found out it crashed/freezed at relatively cool levels. When using the Nvidia drivers from the restricted drivers manager my system would be constantly crashing especially when running video, flash or other graphically intensive applications. Switching off the nvidia drivers helps alot but would still occasionally crash, but much less. In my case the whole system crashes, having the mouse still active would probably mean xorg is fine but something else is acting up.

I attempted to run with the proprietary NVIDIA drivers shut off, but still got crashes.

It is possible as beefcurry wrote that the crashes were less frequent, but I can't swear to it. I haven't been able to discern a pattern in the crashing, so I'm uncertain if there was a change in it.

Hopefully our renewed input will prompt an elevation of this issue. It is damn irritating, as I'm sure you can all imagine.

Sorry I don't have more input, but I will continue to monitor this bug report and let you know about any changes that I experience in the status of the issue.

Thanks.

I crashed three times within 20 minutes of booting this morning - starting with the first just after login.

I then spent some time researching this issue and it seems to be related to the NVidia hardware. I installed envyng-gtk from the Synaptic package manager and ran EnvyNG from the Applications/System Tools menu. I was able to reboot the computer without freezing up and am feeling optimistic about my future with the Hardy Heron.

I will report back after a couple of days.

Phew! That was close!

I was being all arrogant in thinking that my issues had come to an end... Reinstallation of the NVidia drivers by EnvyNG appears to have helped little - it froze up completely again.

It's happening to me too :(, I have a Dell inspiron 9400 with nvidia card GeForce Go 7900 GS. it seems to occur more when I'm using firefox, but happened with other programs too but rarely. I'm considering to make a downgrade to 7.10 which worked like a rock in the same computer.
