System beeps when resuming from hibernation

Bug Description

Since upgrading to hardy, several Laptop models (Dell Latitude, IBM Thinkpad, Toshiba) produce a couple of *very* loud beeps while resuming which bypass all software volume control. They come very quickly after each other (0.5 seconds maybe) and each one lasts for about a second.

This is very embarassing when e.g. resuming in public.

This is *not* a duplicate of #223930.

Bug #223930 is about a Toshiba Laptop having problems with suspend and resume (for some reason someone else added a comment about Beeps with a Thinkpad as well, but that doesn't belong there either).

Confirming, because comment 7 in bug #223930 reports the same behaviour.

Confirming. Same behavior with sony vaio C1Z/B. Seven or eight very fast and loud beeps (perhaps 2 seconds in total)
Behavior is new to hardy.

Confirming, I also have this problem on a HP 2510P Laptop. Suspend and resume works gerenally well, except for the beeping.

I will try to make some sound-recordings later this day.

Nuisance partly solved when resuming from SUSPEND (I did not try hibernation yet). Hardware: HP 2510p laptop.
Go to menu System --> Preferences --> Power Management
Tab: General, uncheck (at bottom) "Use sound to notify in event of an error"

The beeping nuisance occurred on my laptop as a result of upgrading from gutsy to hardy so the beeping probably is a hardy bug. The fact that Ubuntu detects an error might be an older problem. What surprises me is that a few suspend-related messages are written to /var/log/messages only when the laptop resumes ("suspending consoles", "ACPI: PCI interrupt", "Stopping disk", "ricoh-mmc: Suspending").

The hint for turning off the beeping was found here (tamias' 11:53 AM post):

Disabling "Use sound to notify in event of an error" as explained above worked around the problem here as well.

Turning of the notification-sound stopped the beeping too for me (on a HP 2510P). Thanks ThomasN :-)

There's probably an underlying problem causing the sound, which should be solved in the long run.
