Firefox Offline Mode in 3G (with VMC) (Hardy 8.04)

I'm on 3G and get the same problem with firefox always starting in offline mode. The about:config fix doesn't work either....

I connect thru ATT cellular system, hardware is Sierra AC875
data card, software is Kubuntu 8. Network Manager seems
disabled. Kppp is used to control & connect Sierra card.
WIFI is disabled usually. My symptoms are much like his.
Every thing works except Firefox.
