Could you please do:

METACITY_VERBOSE=1 METACITY_DEBUG=1 METACITY_SYNC=1 metacity --replace 2>metacity.log &

and then post the log here after it's failed and you've rebooted? (Be warned that this will slow Metacity down a lot.)

well, it's funny, there are no crashes while running the log command, I had some problems unchecking the the box (gconf-editor » apps » metacity » general » compositing manager) but after closing the terminal I could enable and disable with no problem.
I tried running the log command twice. no crashes, then I tried enabling and disabling the compositing manger without the log command and I get the crashes, had to cut power and reboot.

Okay, so let's find out what's different when you did and didn't run the log command. If you just run

metacity --replace&

does the problem stop happening then?

no, metacity --replace& doesn't make any deference, still crashes.

How about

METACITY_SYNC=1 metacity --replace&

?

no, still crashes and I nearly broke my computer this time by cutting the power, I won't be running any commands any more.

So it's the actual presence of METACITY_DEBUG that seems to be causing your problem. I suspect, though, that your computer was slowed down enough by METACITY_DEBUG that the problem didn't show up.

Let's hope the latest log you posted has enough information to solve the problem...

Yes, it was fixed and worked without any problems on Ubuntu from 8.10 up to 10.10, I haven't tried the compositing manager on Natty as I have a new PC running compiz so I don't need it anymore.
you can close the bug report.
Thank you.
