Bug Description

it seems that the package console-tools can't handle huge fonts like sun12x22 or
similar (i tested suse12x22.psf, that is a "clone" of the sun font above).

Error during boot is:
Cannot (yet) load a non-seekable RAW file

console-tools 0.2.3dbs-56ubuntu8 in Breezy

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Thanks in advance.

It's not an issue for me now. I'm using the virtual console less than years ago...
Thanks.

That doesn't really indicate whether or not the bug still exists though. I'd be happy to test this if you could provide a test case - detailed instructions for recreating the bug.

Try to change the font in /etc/default/console-setup and set a bigger font than the default one:
FONTFACE="Terminus"
FONTSIZE="24x12"
If you do then "/etc/init.d/console-setup restart" it'll give you an error.
In the comments of /etc/default/console-setup it's written that Terminus size 24x12 is valid.

If you use setfont (package kbd-compat) and load directly a big font (Lat15-Terminus24x12.psf.gz) in the /usr/share/consolefonts directory i'll give you another error.

Hope this comment helped.

This is still a problem as of 0.2.3dbs-65ubuntu. Debian's version apparently still has the same problem, while the inability to load any font wider than 8 pixels has been long-since fixed in kbd.

Here is a link to the Debian bug report: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=353203

Here's how I triggered the bug just now: ctrl-alt-F1 to open the console, type

$ consolechars -f /usr/share/consolefonts/Lat15-Terminus24x12.psf.gz
Cannot (yet) load a non-seekable RAW file
read_simple_font(): Invalid argument

Same happens with other Terminus fonts wider than 8 pixels. I don't currently have any wide non-Terminus console fonts.

It looks like upstream development of console-tools is dead -- the last release I was able to date was v0.3.2 from 26 August 1999.

I was leaving this bug open while we still used console-tools, but as people have observed that's currently deprecated in favour of kbd. We switched to kbd by default in Ubuntu 8.10, making this bug effectively obsolete since kbd doesn't suffer from this problem.
