Bug Description

Followed the recent upgrade to linux-image-2.6.24-18-generic, when this was installed, linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-18-generic was not installed as a dependency (as would be expected). As a result ndiswrapper (the most noticeable as it meant wireless was missing) was not available after rebooting into the new kernel.

Using: Hardy 8.04 AMD64

Even on my notebook, after a kernel upgrade and a reboot, I was unable to use the wireless nic (ipw2200). The reason was that linux-ubuntu-modules was not upgraded with the new kernel. I was forced to reboot with the old kernel and manually install the missing package. For a newcomer or a Windows user this is a "show stopper".

Still present with 2.6.24-19. Perhaps the linux-ubuntu-modules meta-package should be restored, then this package could be updated at the same time as linux-image, linux-headers, linux-restricted-modules, etc etc.

Hi,

This bug was reported a while ago and hasn't had any recent activity. Is this still an issue for you? Thanks.

I don't believe it attracted any attention, other than me marking it as confirmed. However, I haven't been using Ubuntu recently, so I can't 100% confirm. But I believe there is still no virtual package for linux-ubuntu-modules, so there is no simple, automatic way to ensure these extra modules are updated whenever the kernel is updated. Unlike with linux-restricted-modules, linux-headers, linux-image, etc.

You are probably correct in voiding this, given the linux-ubuntu-modules package doesn't appear to exist anymore (at least I couldn't see it browsing the web package list). Can you tell me if Ubuntu still ships a pre-built ndiswrapper module, and if so what package it's contained in?
