Hi bkayhan,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISOs are available from cdimage.ubuntu.com)

If it remains an issue, could you also attach a new /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
Thanks in advance.

The output of lspci -vvnn would also be worth having.

Does the problem still occur with Intrepid or Jaunty?

[This is an automated message]

In Jaunty (9.04), we have just updated to the latest
nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 package from nVidia, version 180.44.

This package provides fixes for a large number of bugs, and we need your
assistance in testing if it fixes the issue you reported.

To do this, please do the following:

 a. Update to the 180.44 version of -nvidia using your favorite update
     method

 b. Attempt to reproduce your bug

 c. If your bug still remains, please simply reply to this email
     indicating so.

 d. If your bug is now solved, you can help us by setting your bug
     report to Fix Released:
     * In launchpad, go to your bug report
     * Click on the downward pointing arrow under Status
     * Set the Status field to 'Fix Released'
     * Comment on the change, such as, 'Verified fixed in 180.44'
     * Click 'Save Changes'

 e. If the original problem is solved but there are now other problems,
please close the original bug and open new ones for those issues.

Thank you!

For details on the changes in this version of -nvidia, please see:

Installed Jaunty, but Hardware Drivers recommended 173 instead of 180. 180 is in the repository, though? Should I use it or does it have problems?

That didn't work, and now I can't get the 173 drivers to activate again.

I've posted a new version of the -nvidia driver to our xorg-edgers PPA,
would you mind testing it either on Jaunty or Karmic and see if it
resolves this bug?

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

I downloaded, burned, and booted from xorg-edgers-0.16-i386.iso, and it still doesn't provide 180 drivers. The "Hardware Drivers" window lists 96 and 173. What exactly am I supposed to do to test this?

The latest nvidia drivers available for GeForce FX is 173. If you are experiencing the black window issue with Jaunty or Karmic, you should reopen this bug report. If you are experiencing a different issue, you should report that as a new bug. Thanks.

Reopening. Changing sourcepackage back to -173 as both reports have been with GeForce FX.

Does the problem still occur with compiz and gnome-screensaver disabled?

The problem does not occur if Compiz is disabled (which is why I normally run with Compiz disabled). It's a matter of the video card running out of texture memory, if I understand correctly. I don't know if there's any connection to gnome-screensaver. I can try disabling that.

Disabling the screensaver has no effect, as expected.

I encountered this with a 256MB nvidia 6600GT AGP card when the 'AGP Aperture size' in the BIOS was set to a value lower than the amount of memory on the video card. After upping the value in the BIOS, the problem went away.
