Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

in Intreped, when Clicking on the Network Manager Igon in the system try, I have VPN Connections, but none of my connections appear in the list. If I click "Configure VPN" it takes me to the network connections panel, from here the "add" button is disabled, so I can not add a new VPN either.

Thanks Alex.

Sorry about the Dupe. I should have said that I am using PPTP - I don't know if it helps much, so it's obviously more than the individual VPN types.

I marked https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/255741 as a duplicate of this bug. Obviously it's an issue concerning all types of vpn.

Thanks Alex, OpenVPN is working now with your test svn version. I hope vpnc and pptp will follow.

Hi, pptp seems to work properly. But to get vpnc working we need also an updated .deb "network-manager-vpnc-gnome".
Thanks

I just tried 8.10 in VirtualBox and VPN tabs have these buttons disabled. Damn, I thought this would be the first Ubuntu version that i could recommend my users, whithout "oh and you just need to download pptp and network_manager_pptp before you could configure vpn connection". Oh well :`(

Same line of thought as Diver. It would be nice if you didn't have to do research (like finding this bug) to know you need to install extra packages for this to function

open a wishlist bug against ubuntu that asks for inclusion of vpn plugins on CD.

The point is, that there should not be VPN tab if none of VPN plugins are installed.
Or it should suggest to download one (like with codecs).
Anyway, having VPN plugins on CD is not enough, you should also have network_manager_pptp (whatever it is) installed.
And it is really strange, that there is no default VPN support in ubuntu (how can anoyone download VPN packges without running VPN connection to ISP?). Windows has pptp support since win98, 10 (!) years ago.

Diver -> at best dive down ;) ... having them on CD is equivalent of having htem on CD.

(Further, seriously you should look at other vpn technologies too ... pptp is known to have security issues and the fact that windows has it for ages only means that it was a windows invention (and its most likely the worst vpn that exist!).)
