Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

All Ubuntu distributions...

I always use Ubuntu and usually talk with my friend about it...

The ask me why the update-manager always display to the casual user as first message "Your system is up-to-date".

Casual user read this and he think "ok Ubuntu is up-to-date i don't need to make any check"

I suggest to show "System upgrade manager details..." or something else.

I think this may be considered a user interface communication bug.

Thank you

Thanks for your bugreport.

In intrepid the message when update-manager starts up is "Keep your system up-to-date". Or is your bugreport about that for some people the automatic cron job that fetches the updates does not work?

Michael yes you are right...

But this message is at very startup and for only 2 seconds it show the "Keep your system up-to-date"
then the package check progress bar start to run it read package list and show
user think ok my system is making check i wait for result...

"Your system is up-to-date" (screenshot 1)

the user think ok i must no check my system is updated, but this isn't true (as usually i know isn't true), to be sure the system is updated we must do the check...

and making a check i get ready to download and install packages (screenshoot 2).

Casual always ask me why...? i'm tired to answer i dont' know, so i have filled this user interface bug notification.

Thank you

Hi all,

I can confirm what marcobra is trying to explain.

When I open update-manager the message: "Your sistem is up-to-date" is misleading and not so clear. (New users can think that system is really up to date, instead of clicking "check" button and checking if there are new update available)

It should be changed (IMHO) in "Keep your system up-to-date" until user clicks on "check" button.

blast
