Bug Description

The Targa Traveller 826, being a laptop, provides several Fn key combinations
and special keys to do stuff. Some of them work, some of them are ignored.
Here's a list of unrecognised keys and their keycodes. If xev recognised the key
I have noted that, if kern.log is listed as source that means xev did ignore
that particular key:

Fn + F7 - Audio Volume Down : keycode 174 (xev)
Fn + F8 - Audio Volume Up : keycode 176 (xev)
Fn + F9 - Audio Mute/Unmute : keycode 160 (xev)
Fn + F12 - Sleep/Hibernate : keycode 223 (xev)
"Media Key" - Start Media Player : e012 (kern.log)
"IE Key" - Start Webbrowser : keycode 178 (xev)
"Mail Key" - Start Email client : keycode 236 (xev)
All the keys listed above are ignored and do not perform the required action.

"Bluetooth Key" - connect/activate built-in Bluetooth Device- keycode e062
(kern.log)
This key is somewhat special, as it seems to perform some type of double duty.
Although the key is unknown to the kernel, the built-in Bluetooth device does
indeed get connected/disconnected to the system when using that key. I verified
this by checking kernel logs. The BT connecter seems to be connected via USB and
kern.log contains messages that system does indeed recognise the device.

"Wireless Key" - activate built-in Wireless card - keycode e076 (kern.log)
Similiar to the Bluetooth Key, this one is ignored by xev and the kernel lists
it as an unknown key. However, if you install ndiswrapper drivers you will see
that using that key does indeed activate/deactivate the built-in WLAN card.
However, the WLAN card is a miniPCI slot, therefore you won't see any hotplug
related messages in kern.log, only the output of iwconfig changes accordingly.
On windows, this key works as a H/W-Antenna switch, activating or deactivate the
WLAN-cards antenna. The laptop has a dedicated LED to show the state of this
switch, the LED also works in Linux, no matter if a driver is installed or not.

I have tested this with kubuntu only, I don't know if the keys would work in
Ubuntu or not.

Can you test this on Dapper 6.06.1 or Edgy Beta 1 so we can see if the bug still exists?

I've run a test with the Ubuntu 6.06.1 Desktop amd64 livecd. The following keys seem to work now:

Fn + F7 - Audio Volume Down : keycode 174 (xev)
Fn + F8 - Audio Volume Up : keycode 176 (xev)
Fn + F9 - Audio Mute/Unmute : keycode 160 (xev)
"IE Key" - Start Webbrowser : keycode 178 (xev)
"Mail Key" - Start Email client : keycode 236 (xev)

all other keys still fail with the same log messages as written in the original bug report.

I'll follow up with some more testing with edgy and kubuntu...

Regards,
Dominik

Due to a bug affecting the edgt rc desktop cds I am unable to test this at the moment. I'll try to do some more testing as soon as edgy is released.

The infrastructure is there to handle all of the keys, except the "Media (e012) key". We can enable that one, but we need to know how to identify your laptop; can you please provide the output from:

  cat /var/lib/acpi-support/*-*

Many Thanks

Attached tarball contains the files you requested. Unfortunately, the laptop's manufacturer did not change the bios significantly to reflect the particular box. Instead, it will be referred to as MSI MS-1029 which is the barebone the laptop is based on. MSI sells a laptop based on that barebone as MSI Megabook M635.

Dominik

Is this still a problem in Ubuntu Hardy?
If so, please try updating the files used by hal (package hal-info). See http://people.freedesktop.org/~hughsient/quirk/quirk-keymap-index.html for more information about how to accomplish this.

I haven't had the time to test Hardy, yet. However, I've done some testing with Ubuntu Gutsy. The situation has improved significantly. Apart from the "media player" key, all the keys seem to work now. I have not tested the "Wifi" nor the "External Monitor" Fn2 key, though.

For details, have a look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/TargaTraveller826/Gutsy.

I've tried with the Ubuntu 8.10 livecd. The "media player" key still does not work. Furthermore, the "web browser" key does not work, but used to work with Gutsy.

Reassigning this to udev-extras, for the media keycode to be added there for Ubuntu 9.10. All the other keys mentioned appear to still be handled correctly via /lib/udev/keymaps/micro-star.
