Bug Description

When trying to activate the AC3 pass-through option in the Audio properties
dialog it doesn't do so. It always uses what was used before. This works in
totem-xine.

Thanks for your bug. What version of totem/ubuntu do you use? What version was
used "before". The bug is not really useful without those informations, I'm
marking it as NEEDINFO for now

How do you know if "AC3 pass-through" is used?

In playing with some Totem settings I tried out "AC3 passthough" in the "Edit -> Preferences -> Audio" tab. I lost the sound in the .avi's I was testing with. So, I went back to the "Audio" tab and changed the selection to "Stereo" (Where is was at first). I restarted Totem... still no sound.

I went back to the audio tab and saw that it was still set to "AC3 passthrough" even though I had changed it to "Stereo" the last time I ran the program.

I have tried changing it back many times, but it has always remained on "AC3 passthrough" when ever I have restarted and gone to look at the "Audio" setting.

It has been two years.

I can play movies with ac3 or dts sound without any problems using totem. In totem however I cannot get it to work. I can choose AC3 Passthrough in sound settings, but it has no effect. Furthermore this setting is being reverted to "Stereo" when I restart totem.

I have also recently noticed this problem with totem. AC3 work fine using VLC .. but not with Totem. I'm using Hardy builds and the problem still exists. I'll look into this and see if I can fix it. It's most likely a problem with gstreamer or how Totem is trying to pass AC3 over gstreamer.

Actually looking more into this along with the gnome bug that is linked too. This is an issue with Gstreamer and no app using Gstreamer can use AC3 Passthrough currently, and it has yet to be fixed. If you want to use AC 3 Passthrough you have to change the backend of Totem to Xine.

Jerone Young (jerone) wrote :

A workaround is to use the xine backend. So you install "totem-xine" from apt and launch "totem-xine" . This is totem using xine for the backend. I just tested it and AC3 passes fine now. Hopefully gstreamer will get it together with AC3 passthrough.

Not wanting to sound rude, but now we are right at the beginning again, as I already said it works with totem-xine.

Does gst-plugins-good0.10 0.10.22-1 (available in Debian testing) fix this?

I contains the following new feature:

* directsoundsink: Implement SPDIF support for AC3

Note that if you want to try this you will first need to update GStreamer core/base to >= 0.10.29

I reported that one ages ago... I don't use that version any more.

The pulseaudio part of this bug has been fixed in Ubuntu 11.10 "Oneiric Ocelot" thanks to the update to pulseaudio 1:1.0-0ubuntu1.

Currently, the only client to support passthrough output is the GStreamer PulseAudio plugin. This will be available in the next release (0.10.31) of gst-plugins-good. Once this is installed, you should be able to have passthrough output just work with Totem and most other players that use playbin2.

See http://pulseaudio.org/wiki/Passthrough for more info on passthrough configuration.

gst-plugins-good 0.10.31-1ubuntu1 is now available in Ubuntu 12.04 "Precise Pangolin".

This should now work if you select AC3 Passthrough in Totem's Edit -> Preferences -> Audio tab.
