Bug Description

I have a Dell Inspiron 1200 with Xubuntu 8.10 installed. All updates installed.

When I use the keyboard function keys to change the screen brightness (Fn+up/down) GTK? freezes. Windows do not function properly neither do the menus. I have to kill X to fix the problem.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Have Dell Inspiron 1200 with Xubuntu 8.10 installed. All updates installed.
2. Log into graphical environment XFCE.
3. On the keyboard hit Fn+Arrowup/Arrowdown to change screen brightness.
4. See XFCE freeze, basically becoming useless.
5. Kill X to start fresh.

Expected outcome:
Use Fn key combo to change screen brightness without causing failures in other system components or software.

Side Note: Fn key combo for audio volume up/down does not cause problems. Although using Fn combo for audio does not show a graphical representation on screen as the screen brightness key combo does.

I can confirm that this happens to me when I have the brightness applet on my gnome-panel on my Acer Aspire One with Ubuntu 8.10.

Please tell us if that has any effect on the operation of your machine.

Thank you

Sorry I read Xubuntu as Ubuntu everywhere. I'm not sure if Xubuntu has a brightness applet or not but I basically have the same issues. Sometimes I even get an area on the screen (a small box) where it's supposed to draw the brightness box.
