I can confirm this with Ubuntu Intrepid (8.10)

I can't maximize Inkscape's window when I use default Human theme. Also I have "Make the commands toolbar icons smaller" and "Make the main toolbar icons smaller" options checked in Inkscape' preferences.

Workaround - not use Human theme.

Same problem on Hardy. The maximize problem depends on the the theme used. When using the Mist theme or Crux it is possible to maximize, but with the Clearlooks and and Human theme is isn't possible. When using the Mist theme or Crux the maximize state is still not remembered by the application and after a restart the application still half of the screen.
