file browser won't display files when selecting icon for new launcher

Bug Description

In Ubuntu 8.10, when creating a new launcher on the desktop, if you try to select a custom icon and hit the browse button to search for an image file, the file browser will not display any files for you even if some exist.

After the launcher is created, you can change the icon and the file browser works fine, so at least there is a work around.

Specific steps:
1) right click on desktop, choose "create launcher"
2) click icon button to open icon selection window
3) click "browse" button and go to a folder you know images exist (svg, png, nothing will display for you to select)
4) Cancel out of the file browser, select an icon from the normal icon selection list, and create the launcher.
5) Right click on the launcher and click "properties"
6) Click the icon button to select a different icon
7) Notice that it doesn't even bring up the icon selector, it just opens the file browser straight away, and you can now see files to select for the icons.

So really, this bug is both about the inconsistency in what comes up when you click the icon button, and the fact that you can't use a custom icon until the launcher is already created.

I'm updated, so it shouldn't be fixed already in the released package updates, but I have not tried any development packages or anything of that nature.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in nautilus.

For future reference you might be interested to know that a lot of applications have bug reporting functionality built in to them. This can be accessed via the Report a Problem option in the Help menu for the application with which you are having an issue. You can learn more about this feature at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

For this particular issue, I think it is a misunderstanding of the process more so than a bug. When you get to step 3) in your procedure, you are browsing to a "folder that contains files", so no particular files will show up in the browse for a folder dialog until you select a folder. However, at that point, in the "Browse icons" list...you should see a list of the files. Does that make sense?

You are correct, I misunderstood the dialogue. Selecting a folder and then clicking ok allowed me to view the applicable files in the icon selection window.

I still feel it's a bit confusing though since it never says I'm browsing for a folder, so I guess maybe it's an enhancement request to be less confusing ;-)

Hi, I think I have found a workaround. Please follow these steps:

1. Click the icon you want to change
2. the browse will pop up
3. move to the directory you stored the image (work even with jpg!) you like
4. in the location bar put '*' and press enter
5. a new browse window will appear but it will be empty (now the path is like /home/andrea/Documents/*)
6. Delete the '*' (/home/andrea/Documents/)
7. you will be able to see your images!

regards
andrea
