Bug Description

I've been using the following statement in my /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf:

# Mute CPU speaker
blacklist pcspkr

since I started running ubuntu 5.10.

Having my computer beeping at me annoys me senselessly when a regular speaker noise could be generated and the internal computer beep made me initially think my MoBo was giving me "beep codes" and then Ubuntu broke my pc when I first started running it freshman year of high school.

I would like to propose that Ubuntu disables the system beep behavior by default because it is:

--Antiquated, the system beep is a holdover, most modern systems (Windows/Mac do not enable it by default.)
--Unnecessary, I just had a UI experience of my life, after using *buntu for nearly four years as my primary OS, I bought a Mac. I have since switched back to Ubuntu and I'm quite impressed, it's matured quiet a bit, but some of the old annoyances are really starting to grind my gears, this is one of them.

I just have to say that the system beep was not included as a "feature" and it certainly was NOT missed.

Thanks! I hope *buntu is smart enough to disable this annoying behavior by default in it's next release.

In a cafe now, annoying the hell out of everyone around me because Ubuntu beeps under mute everytime I do a failed Firefox page search.

The blacklist method works for me now, but let me just say it is hardly the expected system "mute" behavior. And what about when I'm home unmuted and WANT beeps?
