I have exactly the opposite problem: songs are actually added to playlists more than once (via context menu, add to custom playlist), which is not what I want. So I'd rather ask for prevention of multiple identical entries. The problem is further that deleting one of those multiple entries in a playlist kills all instances of that track on the list.

What version are you using? This should not happen in trunk anymore.
(Maybe 0.3.0.1 too already)

Hello, same problem in trunk-2009-11-06.
As a workaround, I can edit manually the playlist file and reload it.

In revision 2714, the bug seems now to be corrected (it is possible to add a song multiple times).

However, as Carbon reported, removing an instance of the song in a playlist removes all the instances of the song in the playlist.

Could allowing multiple identical tracks possibly made optional?

My usage scenario is that I have several custom playlists with favorite songs of various genres. When I add songs to those I usually can't remember if it's already on the list (huge library). Thus I end up cleaning my fav lists again and again from duplicates.

I forgot: making that an option _per playlist_ would be the best solution I think.

as of trunk/2825, the playlist will no longer remove all instances of a duplicated song, only the selected ones.

Carbon: I'd suggest that you just use the playlist search box to check for existence before you add. It's possible we'll allow some configurability in the future, but for now I'd prefer to keep the playlist code from growing any more complex.

Aren, I think the least to do would be to allow removing duplicates
automagically from a menu item.

Which means another menu item to take care of, more code to take care of, more menu clutter.... We CANNOT maintain every feature every person wants with our limited development power, so we need to concentrate on those features that are of the greatest use to our users. Additionally, the plugins system is perfectly capable of supporting a plugin to add such a menu item - nothing stops a user who cares enough from writing a plugin for this feature and then posting it to the wiki or forums for other users to use.
