Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-media

I installed a brand new copy of karmic amd64 and am having this problem after uninstalling pulse audio

gnome-volume-control -p playback

Re-installing pulse audio fixes the problem. I originally wanted to remove pulse audio because it doesn't really add any functionality I need beyond what ALSA already gives me and just slows performance down.

I think this is really more of a "bug" with gnome-settings-daemon. Anyway... if you want to run GNOME in Karmic without PulseAudio: https://launchpad.net/~dtl131/+archive/ppa

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. A new version of GNOME Media is available in both Lucid and Maverick and we are wondering if this is still reproducible in any of those versions, May you please test and give us of feedback about it? Thanks in advance.

Pedro, this is designed behavior so you should probably mark this 'Won't Fix'. In previous bugs, I have asked devs about having a gstreamer fallback if no pulseaudio is present, and none of the devs seemes enthusiastic about it, claiming not enough time/manpower etc. As I said in comment #2, use my PPA if you want to run GNOME without Pulse (Maverick versions coming soon).
