Bug Description

Binary package hint: empathy

There is a certain contact (using a mac) and while his status is 'online' (I verified this in other IM clients)
he remains 'offline' for me. I can chat but not see when he is online.

The problem is that I cannot "reproduce" the problem, the contact just seems offline while he is actually online (like I said before: I checked it with other IM clients)

The issue is an upstream one and it would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug the to the people writting the software (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME)

I just filed https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=607984 cause I've been affected by this bug quite some time now and haven't seen anything upstream.

They responded that it is not a bug in gnome, and should be reported to https://bugs.freedesktop.org/

This means this bug should be changed to the correct telepathy-spec. Which means we need more information from those effected. Which spec are you using that this problem occurs? (AIM, MSN, GTALK, etc...). Once the spec is found it can be reported correctly to the freedesktop people.

MSN, I filed a bug for butterfly, but it was duped to this one. I change this to an MSN specific bug. Please correct me, if you notice this on other systems.

Ryan, could you please tell us which client and version your contacts are using? this would help us reproduce this bug

I seem to have the same problem. This only occurs with the MSN protocol, with people that are using a Mac OS X client (presumably iChat, but I will try to verify this).

I am now pretty sure that this problem only occurs when the other person is using iChat. Mac OS X users using Adium appear as online, like they should.

I've got the same problem in python-papyon 0.4.8-0ubuntu1 in Lucid. My colleague uses the Microsoft Messenger for Mac (so it's not just iChat) and I can't see him or initialise conversations with him when he's online. If he logs in using Adium I can see him fine.
