They should not do anything unless GNOME is actually talking through them (e. g. palimpsest, the "disk utility in the menu; or you plug in an USB drive). Can you please do

  sudo /usr/lib/udisks/udisks-daemon --replace

it should settle after some 2 seconds. Doesn't it for you? Do you get any permanent output? Does "top" show any activity from them?

Thanks for the feedback.

I tried doing what you asked but it did not go away. Besides that command stays in the foreground and does not return control back to me unless I terminate it with Ctrl+C. Even if I put it into the background top still shows udisks-daemon as being the no 1 process always. I put it into the background by keeping a separate shell window open for root purposes and sent it to the background from there.

The load has not dropped at all. Also I have a USB mouse and a USB keyboard always plugged in. Other than that nothing else is plugged in. BTW this is a new issue, did not happen in 9.04 the load was stable then. I have not tried 9.10.

Killing udisks seemed to help. I notice that this problem is tied to udevd for the Optiarc DVD RW AD-7560S drive.
I filled out a bug report there too. See bug #379780
