Can you try changing GTK themes, and see if that solves the issue
(System>Preferences>Appearance)? I seem to remember that some incomplete
themes might break the slider. Just a thought.

Changing themes does make a difference.

These themes work:

  * Darkroom
  * Dust
  * Dust Sand
  * High Contrast Inverse
  * Human

These themes do not work

  * Clearlooks
  * Human Clearlooks
  * High Contrast Large Print Inverse

As a control experiment, using a theme that does not work (Human Clearlooks), I do the following.

1. Open OpenShot. --> no zoom-slider

2. Import a 7.3 KB svg image. --> no zoom-slider

3. Add the image to the time line. --> no zoom-slider

4. Use ctrl-mouse-wheel to zoom the time line.

   Results:

   a. The zoom-slider will now appear.
   b. As long as the caption to the right of the zoom-slider is in the
      range of 1 to 9 seconds it will continue to appear.
   c. As soon as it requires a double digit range, it disappears.

The disappearance of the double digit-range behaviour is consistent with the default range being 15-seconds.

Hope this helps, david
