Bug Description

I can't seem to get decent playback output using the openchrome xorg driver in combination with XvMC on my Via Epia SP8000 board (CN400).
Mythtv/XvMC Playback worked fine with Karmic. (and also on an earlier version, not sure if it was gutsy or jaunty)

The symptoms i see:
- Jerky video playback
- Deinterlace problems (one field shown in top half of the screen, and 2nd field in the bottom half).
(this seems to be intermittent, thus causing the screen to jump around a lot).

In general, lucid seems to have problems with this graphics hardware, the boot splash image is also distorted, and when i remove the 'splash' and 'quiet' flags from the boot options, it will start booting ok, but halfway through the process it will jump into a strange mode, much asif the top 2/3 of the screen shows one deinterlace field, and the bottom 2/3 the other.
(note that this system is connected to a CRT based TV via the composite output)

Initial Xorg would not display properly either, i had to create a Xorg.conf file.

After an evening puzzling with this i found the following:
- The startup problems (distorted console) are solved when i use the karmic 2.6.31 based kernel
- The XvMC problems seem to be due to a wrong setting of the playback engine in mythtv (Standard XvMC i.s.o. Via XvMC). How this setting got changed is beyond me, perhaps it happened in the database upgrade.

Which means that my main problem, the distorted video, is now solved.
The distorted console with the 2.6.32 based kernel remains.

Hi,

First, my appologies for the late response.

After changing to the correct XvMC engine, Mythtv seems
to playback correctly.
Skipping forward also works properly however, skipping
backward results in a blank screen (while audio is still ok)
This is anoying, but when i quit playback, and restart, it is ok.
I'm not sure if this is due to a problem in myth, or in xvmc.

My plan is to do a fresh install using the released mythbuntu,
(now it is running an updated prerelease), and see how it
behaves then.

Regards,
Mark.

Hi,

I did a reinstall of the released ubuntu lucid, and updated
it to current state (dd may 13th), and status is the same as
mentioned earlier.
Btw, installing ubuntu lucid on this system using the default
cd is horrible, it just would not show properly on my flatpanel
(1920x1080) or on my PAL TV. I had to switch to the alternate
installer, to do a textbased install using my flatpanel.

To summarize the xvmc issue, playback using mythtv/via-xvmc
is fine, skip forward is also fine, but skip backward turns the
screen blue/grey (audio is still playing, osd shows up fine),
and it remains that way until playback is stopped and restarted
again from the menu.

Regards,
Mark.

Do you have problem with some garbage on PAL TV?

Please build/install the latest openchrome driver and enable debug mode.
The detail build instruction for Ubuntu/Debian is available at:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenChrome

Attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file.

Try also enable EXA in xorg.conf file, by adding following line:
Option "AccelMethod" "exa"

My system has died last month. I've replaced it with a Zotac ION board, and am therefore not using openchrome anymore. Thus i am unable to give any more feedback on this issue.
