Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

Tested on two almost identical Compaq Deskpro Evo's. One with 10.04 installed + CRT, and the other running 10.04 live from a CD + LCD detected as Hewlett Packard 17".

The Live CD boots, and runs at monitors max resolution. Reducing and then increasing resolution works except that the mouse pointer is no longer visible. Mouse is otherwise functional. Reducing the resolution again brings the pointer back.

To reproduce:
1 Boot from CD - selecting Try Ubuntu 10.04
2 Run the "Monitor Preferences" applet ( System->Preferences->Monitors )
3 Reduce the resolution and click 'Apply'
4 Either let the dialog box time out or click button to return to previous resolution.
5 Note the missing pointer!

From my experimentation, it seems any increase in resolution, whatever the method, results in a missing pointer, however a decrease in resolution does not.

My eeePC 900 running Lucid does not suffer this problem - leading me to believe it might be some how hardware (graphics) related - perhaps a unique code path, or something failing, preventing the pointer being 'unhidden'. Thats just my programming intuitive guess however.

After some more testing - I have found using xrandr from the command line to adjust the resolution upwards, does not affect the mouse pointer visibility. So a temporary fix is to make a script, and perhaps a make a launcher from the panel, or menu.

setmyres.sh
-------------------8<------------------------

#! /bin/bash
xrandr --size 1280x1024

I'm also experiencing this problem in Compaq Deskpro Evo. The way i get the mouse pointer back is;
Going to Applications >> Sound and Video >> Movie Player; from the mouse (Still Invisible).
After Movie player is launched mouse pointer is exactly at the middle of the viewing pane (of Movie Player) even though we can't see it. Then just double-click to make it go full-screen. Now you should be able to see the mouse pointer. I stumbled upon this when i was experimenting to get back the mouse pointer. Although this is not a perfect solution, as in every time you log-in, you have to repeat the steps to get the mouse pointer back.
