Bug Description

I am using unity and chatting with a friend in empathy now I minimize the chat window when he sends me message the icon of empathy in the unity launcher starts to blink(not exactly) at the same time messaging menu turns green. This makes the same functionality duplicated. empathy/xchat icon in the unity launcer should not change its position.

If Empathy is going to be the default IM client on Ubuntu, then it needs
to detect and use the Messaging Menu, and not display the alternative
empathy-specific indicator.

Thanks for reporting this bug and testing unity.

Can you confirm you don't have this behavior on the GNOME session (logout, and in GDM choose your name, then "GNOME" as session). The settings shouldn't differ there.

Can you check in empathy preferences that you have "show incoming messages in the messaging menu" checked?

If empathy is using the messaging menu AND still puts an icon in the systray, that's a bug in the empathy package.

ok, there might have been a confusion here. I should have been clear with words :(
I reported against the icon of empathy in the unity launcher when a new message arrives and the chat window is open(but not active) the icon vibrates every five seconds. I think its by design so that the messages dont get lost. I reported this because I have been using unity for 10 days (fulltime) and this seems to cause a distraction.

Ah, OK.

Folks, this is a bug in Unity, not Empathy.

When a window calls for attention, the required behaviour is:

 - the icon for that app in the Launcher should reveal if it is hidden,
and jiggle briefly
 - an emblem for "has called attention" should then be applied to the
icon. for example, the triangle to show the app is running, might go
red. I believe we are waiting for candidate visuals for that emblem /
display
 - the icon *should not jiggle again*. At the moment, it jiggles
regularly, hence the bug.

 affects unity

In discussions with David Siegel and Christian Giordano I've agreed to three wiggles :-). There are some other details:

 - the "running" pointer will change visually (Otto is finalising)
 - and the Ubuntu logo on the panel will also get an "alert" state to match, as long as any of the launchers are calling for attention
    - the pattern there is the same as the pattern in the session (power) menu, when reboot is required

When the spec for this is final, Christian will also update this bug.

Unity should definitely be used together with the Mesaging Menu, and
other Ayatana indicators. Did I misunderstand your suggestion?
