Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 631494

This will help us to find and resolve the problem. Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your bug report. Thanks in advance!

We also need to know if the mouse you are using is a PS/2 or USB mouse, corded or cordless. Or is this using the touchpad on your portable system?

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Thanks for the supporting documentation! Since this bug has enough information provided for a developer to begin work, I'm going to mark it as confirmed and let them handle it from here. Thanks for taking the time to make Ubuntu better!

Has someone affected by this bug sent a bug report to the other distributions? Could you tell us the bug number, so we can add a bugwatch that will inform us about its status? Ubuntu will not actually be working those bugs, and the fix in Ubuntu may or may not work in them. The tasks you have opened are used to track bugs in the other distributions. Thanks in advance.

Thank you for responding. If they are failing also, comments are enough to tell the developers of Ubuntu that. Without an upstream bug report, there will be no action taken for those distributions. I am marking the upstream projects as invalid because there are no upstream report numbers.

Same here, Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook S7010 with Intel 8285x (82852 or 82855, at least that's what the Windows driver supplied by Fujitsu-Siemens reports): 10.04 has the black screen of death bug (see also #576294 and #568939). 10.10 starts up but the mouse pointer is invisible. The mouse itself works, i.e. if I blindly push it to the top-right, then move it back a little, the "power button" menu opens, and as I drag the mouse downwards, the menu items get highlighted.

So the issue is *not* about the mouse hardware not being recognized; the system recognizes the mouse and knows where it's pointing, it's just that the pointer is not rendered on the screen.

This, in conjunction with the fact that both Raoulsana and I are seeing this behavior on laptops affected by the 10.04 black screen of death issue, causes me to suspect a graphics driver bug.

I have all similar problems with Dell Inspiron 1150 intell 82852 graphics card. But one additional.

Had black screen in 10.4
Had mouse not visible problem in all 10.10 alpha versions and in beta.

I upgraded to the partial upgrade after installing beta version from scratch on 9/13/10 at 1:00AM MST and now I boot into console mode, no graphics found.

Just tried the live CD (released today) on the Lifebook S7010 and it looks OK: I get a screen with a mouse pointer, so it seems the issue is resolved. I'll upgrade the installation and post the results when running from hard disk.

Can you bring back the cursor if you switch to console and back with Ctrl+Alt+F1 and Ctrl+Alt+F7?

Sometimes after the screensaver, the mouse pointer becomes invisible on a current to 11/6 Maverick 10.10 system. I am running the Nvidia graphics 6150, without the proprietary drivers. I don't recall seeing this problem in any earlier release. The hardware did not have problems with the 10.04 black screen of death. Going to a virtual terminal and returning did not restore the pointer. I usually just reboot.
