Missing dependency on libgamin0

Bug Description

While installing Ubuntu Edgy on a new machine yesterday, I noticed that my XFCE session was acting strange (right-click on desktop didn't do anything, etc.). I examined the ~/.xsession-errors file and found some error messages that mentioned libgamin. I uninstalled fam and installed both gamin and libgamin0, and the problems went away.

It looks like some XFCE package (presumably this one) needs to depend on libgamin0.

what error messages did you see?
gamin is depended on by thunar, so it should have been in the default xubuntu-desktop install. Did you install xubuntu edgy from a CD?

I don't remember what the exact content of the error message was, but some XFCE component was definitely complaining about not being able to find a .so file that started with libgamin.

I'm looking at thunar's description in aptitude, and I don't see the gamin dependency. I do note, however, that libthunar-vfs-1-2 depends on either libgamin0 or libfam0. For some reason, the latter seems to have been chosen initially.

I installed the edgy release from a Ubuntu Live CD (not Xubuntu), and then later installed most of xubuntu-desktop, sans some of the packages I do not use.

removing libgamin removed thunar and xubuntu-desktop so I do not see how this could have occured. Closing now but please reopen if you can reproduce it.

Changed in xfce-mcs-manager:
status: Unconfirmed → Rejected

Did you try to concurrently install fam and uninstall gamin? Just removing gamin is a red herring.

Come to think of it, maybe the best solution would be to drop the choice of libgamin0 or libfam0 from libthunar-vfs-1-2, and only permit libgamin0.

I see now that either of them is a dependency. That is automatically generated from the shlibs file of libgamin which is the build dependecny of the package. In the default install
we get libgamin0, if it does not work with libfam0 that is an unuspported configuration and possibly a fam bug.
