wxmaxima - missing menu bar

Bug Description

Binary package hint: unity

After reading all the hype about the new unity window manager, I thought I would see how it worked. I tried it briefly. During the trial, I used wxMaxima. The menu bar for that application was placed at the top like OS X does. When I went back to gnome, wxmaxima is now missing the menu altogether. It doesn't show up at all. I found some others complaining about this at:

I created a new account and tried wxmaxima and it still was missing the menu. I removed any package with unity in its name and still no menu.

Any tips would be appreciated. I really would like the menu back.

If I go back into unity, the menu bar is there again, but go back to gnome and it is gone again. (Perhaps this is a gotcha to make you switch!) ;-)

The menu disappears even if you don't start wxMaxima under Unity. I installed wxMaxima after switching back to the default gnome desktop and it didn't have a menu to start with. Funny thing is that if i install indicator-applet-appmenu and add it to the gnome panel, it shows the wxMaxima menu (however, it doesn't show the Lyx menu, so using it is not a solution).

Interesting! I have the problem with wxmaxima, but not with Lyx before installing indicator-applet-appmenu, and then after installing indicator-applet-appmenu, Lyx doesn't work, but wxmaxima does.

I found a way to get wxmaxima's menu bar back

First i uninstalled ubuntu-netbook, but still no joy.
$sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-netbook

Then i removed autoinstalled deps with:
$sudo apt-get autoremove
(I dont know if it was really necessary but i ran a $sudo dpkg-reconfigure ubuntu-desktop after that)

And voilá, wxmaxima menu bar is back in business.

For the record, I finally got my menus back by completely removing appmenu-gtk.

Why this is duplicate of bug #619811, which is about lyx menus not working? I can't see the correlation. As wxmaxima is using wxwidgets I would assume this is duplicate of bug #662077.
