Bug Description

Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid. (upgraded from a version 9 with download)

No login sounds. Even with USB add-on audio device.

No volume control (pretty much) volume needs to me on max to be audible,
then raising volume makes for (too) loud - volume control has no lower settings, it can't be heard below max volume (for sure).
Describe volume control as very "on-off".

Set Sound Preferences Output to the USB Turtle beach device.

Been running Lucid (as above) on an old Dell P4, no audio problems. This is a new Gigabyte board with on-board audio (no sound) then added USB audio device, now plays music, but no login sounds, and volume control issues as described above.

Hey, thanks!

you have to select a model for your alc887 , the auto model does not work

[ 12.828284] hda_codec: num_steps = 0 for NID=0xc (ctl = Front Playback Volume)
[ 12.848284] hda_codec: num_steps = 0 for NID=0xc (ctl = Front Playback Volume)

try those model of alc883/888 which create switch at node 0x0c since there is no volume control at node 0x0c
