Launcher ellipsing occurs despite sufficient whitespace

Bug Description
Binary package hint: unity
In the launcher names are ellipsed (...) such that they fit within a grid:
Shortname VeryVeryLon.
In all the cases I've see so far the full name could be fitted (unshortened) if the icon fit was retained, but was not enforced for the names.
