Bug Description

Since yesterday we have an Ubuntu 11.04 weblive available here: http://www.edubuntu.org/vmmanager

As unity-3d won't work over NX, we're using unity-2d. It starts fine but won't show any icon, also the application chooser part of unity doesn't show anything.

I get the following error messages in .xsession-errors:

Thanks for the bug report Stéphane.

A couple of questions:
By "not showing any icon" do you mean there are no items in the launcher (sidebar on the left of the screen)? Or there are items but no icons on them?
By "application chooser part" do you mean the application that comes up when you click on the Ubuntu 'circle of friends' button on the top left corner of the screen? If so this means you are hitting bug #706754 that is fixed and soon to be uploaded to 11.04 (probably tomorrow).

Weblive is publicly accessible to everyone, just click on the URL I gave, enter a username and password and see for yourself. All you need is a java plugin installed on your machine.
As it's running on a remote server, making a screenshot isn't really easy :)

bug #706754 seems to be one of the issues I see, though I'd still think some icons should show up.

Very informative Stéphane, thank you.

Screenshot-1.png is the bug we talked about earlier on.
Screenshot.png is missing 8 big icons and I have no definite explanation for that as of yet. One idea that comes to mind is the following: do you have Unity 3D installed? If not do you have the unity-asset-pool package installed? If unity-asset-pool is installed, what is the content of /usr/share/icons/unity-icon-theme/apps/128 ? If it contains svg files, then do you have libqt4-svg installed?

I just gave it a try, and it seems to work well now.

The only glitch is that the launcher, by default, doesn’t have any favorite (pinned) applications. This is because the GConf key /desktop/unity-2d/launcher/favorites is empty. Stéphane, you may want to add some default favorites to populate the launcher a bit. FYI, these are the contents of the key as set by the package when first installed:

[ubiquity-gtkui.desktop,nautilus-home.desktop,firefox.desktop,libreoffice-writer.desktop,libreoffice-calc.desktop,libreoffice-impress.desktop,ubuntu-software-center.desktop,ubuntuone-control-panel-gtk.desktop]

Ok, I added these values as default gconf keys in my build script and also re-configured gnome-terminal to avoid having a software rendered transparent background. WebLive is now rebuilding for both 11.04 Ubuntu VMs. Should be available in less than 2 hours.
