The same thing happens for me after my laptop switches of the screen due to idleness. After moving the mouse or pressing the keyboard the screen wakes up again but greets me with a frozen desktop. Mouse movement still works though.

Using Ubuntu Natty with the latest updates.

Timo, before or after the bug has occurred?

It's usually best to collect it from right after the bug has occurred.

Is it possible to run that command from the console or do I need a
gui? That's because right after the bug has occurred I can access the
console, but I have to restart X in order to have a working gui

Yes, it will pop up a console-based interface for sending in the bug.

The Gdm log 2 has a backtrace that does appear to be what gets shown when there's a gpu hang, however no gpu lockup error numbers are shown in the dmesg as usual.

Please reproduce the freeze, and then with the system frozen ssh into it (you may have to connect ethernet cable) and collect both 'dmesg > dmesg.txt' and your /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state and attach both to this bug report.

Hi Bryce, I managed to collect all the things that you were asking through ssh.
