Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please attach to this reports the log files in /var/log/apt so we know what packages triggered this.

You can try to fix it by running:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get --fix-broken

affects: update-manager (Ubuntu) → ubuntu

I added the apt log but there doesn't seem to be much of interest in there

I was upgrading to Ubuntu 11.10 - I was wondering where I could find info as to what caused this

I though this was after the upgrade... Then the correct logs are in
/var/log/dist-upgrade

I don't think this is a duplicate as I removed the offending package and still get the error

could you remove gcj-4.4-jre-lib and try the upgrade again.

There's a problem with ia32-libs on my system. I removed it, and the upgrade now works.
