You can try to fix it by running:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get --fix-broken

I added the apt log but there doesn't seem to be much of interest in there

I was upgrading to Ubuntu 11.10 - I was wondering where I could find info as to what caused this

I though this was after the upgrade... Then the correct logs are in
/var/log/dist-upgrade

I don't think this is a duplicate as I removed the offending package and still get the error

could you remove gcj-4.4-jre-lib and try the upgrade again.

Nope did that and still get the error

Removed anything gcj related and it worked!

I'm still getting this error, and I've taken all the recommended steps.

There's a problem with ia32-libs on my system. I removed it, and the upgrade now works.

@Jacob, please file a new report and attach the content of /var/log/dist-upgrade.
