Bug Description

In the german translation of the Patience game kpat the name of a game variation is "zigeuner".

"zigeuner" is considered being a racial slur like "nigger".

I reported this today on the kde bugtracker but it is not considered being a problem.
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=293054
But I think its at least a clear violation of the Ubuntu Code of Conduct.

Also consider that this is one of the base packages you get when you install kubuntu.

Discussion says this is a translation of "gypsy" which could be taken in a negative context. A better translation should be found.

Unless someone from the community records an audio message which can be identified as an insult and make sure it plays when someone starts playing the game, I do not see how this has anything to do with the CoC. The CoC defines how the Ubuntu community is supposed to interact with each other, not what words can or cannot be used in software distributed by us. That is not to say that we have no choice - if we believe something to be not right we can of course change it in the software. That still would have nothing to do with the CoC though.

Now this ultimately is an upstream issue and upstream is trying to find a solution for this (if there even is one). For the time being I do share upstreams opinion though. Particularly since words themselves don't slur, it's everything around them that makes it slur (context, ton of voice and whatnot).

Also we should avoid referencing The Gypsy Baron, Brahms or the Gypsy scale in future software.

how would you feel if the games had offensive names like

"nigger"
"fag"
"paki"

no problem since the words themselves are not offensive?

i understand that the roma&sinti community has a smaller lobby than the black or homosexual communities, but that doesnt make their ethnic slurs less offensive.

the right thing has to be done.

This has nothing to do with community lobbying but with established names for things and whether those are communicating the wrong message. Now I am not well enough informed about patience games that I'd know whether Zigeuner is the german name for that particular version, but if it is I don't see much reason to change it.
As suggested in my previous comment, by that judgement one would have to refrain from using the word in any context, which would mandate revising quite a few operas (including variations thereof) and classic compositions in general.

Personally I do not see a problem if a game was traditionally called 'fag'. If the game were about shooting humanoid characters that were modeled to resemble certain homosexual stereotypes (as to indicate shooting of homosexuals) that would be a problem. Of course one might still want to consider calling a new game 'fag' as to avoid discussions like this one.

This is not a Code Of Conduct issue, this is instead a question of whether the package passes acceptability requirements in Ubuntu (in the same way whether porn or other types of iffy content are accepted).

The CoC refers to the conduct of Ubuntu Members, and this seems to be an upstream issue.

If anyone objects to this package being included in Ubuntu because it contains strings that are deemed offensive, I would raise this with the Community Council or Technical Board.
