Bug Description

This is only happening after a recent update, which may have included changes to PulseAudio, I'm not sure.

Anyway - the steps to reproduce on my system are:

1. Run pacmd
2. Run list-sinks to see if the C-Media_USB_Audio_Device is selected (has an asterisk next to it)
3. Run set-default-sink if necessary
4. Open Firefox and go to Youtube and play a video
5. Observe the sound is coming from the internal audio not the headset
6. Open Rythmbox and play an MP3, observe the sound coming correctly from the headset
7. Run list-sink-inputs and note that only the Rythmbox sink is listed even though both are playing sound

Expected result:

Sound comes out the default sink at all times

Actual result:

Sound from the browser is not managed by PulseAudio and is just going out the default

I can confirm this issue; the new alsa-lib upload, 1.0.25, does not appear to be correctly routing output to pulseaudio by default as has been the case for several cycles, but it works correctly if one sets up asound.conf by hand to reference pulse. This of course needs to be fixed ASAP.

Steve,

Unless a fix is imminent it might be useful to put the workaround here (I'm asking this in selfish mode, since I want to get Flash audio working again : ) )

What do the contents of asound.conf need to be (bearing in mind that I don't seem to even have such a file in my system)

Thanks,

@Brendan,

The contents of the /etc/asound.conf are here: http://paste.ubuntu.com/833963/

Ok, I got the path for the new configuration directory provided by ALSA a little wrong, and since I don't use flash...

Anyway, a new pulseaudio and bluez have been uploaded with corrected install paths.

pulseaudio (1:1.1-0ubuntu7) precise; urgency=low

  * Move the pulse.conf ALSA config file to the correct location, alsa.conf.d
not conf.d, thanks to Pete Graner for teh heads up.

If like I was, you're continually checking this bug, waiting for the fix to propagate to 11.10 because flash keeps going soundless for you, then try deleting ~/.pulse/ and restarting, then set your preferences again in pavucontrol. This appears to have resolved the problems I was having for over a month when using flash with my USB audio device.
