Bug Description

From bug 947468:

Hey Barry,
Unity2D doesn't use those settings, they're Unity only. The Alt key is hardcoded in unfortunately. This could be made a setting if enough people want it. I advise opening a bug asking for the Alt key to be a dconf option, and hopefully we'll get to it.

This is my plea to make this configurable. The current behavior makes Unity 2D essentially unusable for an Emacs user like myself, and I love U2D! ;)

Also, asides making it possible to turn it off, I have a bit of a usability issue.

While working in gnome-terminal and Chromium I tend to hit the alt-button while switching tabs sometimes briefly and it triggers the hud to come up. This is quite intrusive, as I have to stop and press Escape after that. I noticed it a few times first and now it is becoming quite annoying.

Not sure I should open another bug or whether this is close enough to this issue.

I think this one is close enough. While this causes me huge amounts of pain
as an Emacs user, it's really a deeper issue. As you noticed, I also
incorrectly invoke the HUD all the time when Alt-Tabbing between windows.
This really needs to be addressed before 12.04 is released.

Better logic would be welcome too. Speaking for 3D UI aswell.
Pressing alt in fullscreen provokes HUD and alt action in program in question, resulting lose of focus from program.
Realy annoying.

If I disable HUD key from CCSM it disables alt+tab too. That ain't so good either.

For fullscreens, I think one option would be that super button, that would bring launcher & dash from back to front and then taping alt would bring HUD in focus.
Other option would be that none of unity keys would not work, except ctrl+alt+{left, right,up,down} to change workspace. On other workspace fullscreen focus would not be problem anymore.

Marking this as High as it affects many users.

And I also got annoyed by the fact that I can't change it on Unity 2d. While I like and use HUD frequently, it conflicted with many of my current shortcuts, making it almost unusable for me.

The key should be configurable via 'Keyboard/Shortcuts' in Gnome Control Center

Hi. I went to System Settings->Keyboard->Shortcuts and couldn't find any
control for the HUD invocation.

Is it somewhere else?

I think the "should" was a "there should be, but is not".

Seems like this is causing quite a few problems for people. Could you please take a look to see how to mitigate the problem?
